The International Gemological Institute (IGI), founded in 1975, stands as the largest independent gemological laboratory globally, operating in key diamond trade cities worldwide.

IGI Diamond Grading Standards

A team of experienced gemologists, supported by state-of-the-art equipment, conducts a scientific analysis of each diamond to provide an accurate and detailed description of its characteristics and the quality of its cut.

  • Diamond Carat The carat weight and measurements of the diamond are precisely determined using meticulously calibrated instruments.
  • Diamond Color The diamond’s color is evaluated on a scale ranging from D (colorless) to Z (yellow), by comparing it to standardized master stones with predetermined colors. Additionally, the level of fluorescence is assessed and recorded on a scale from None to Strong.
  • Diamond Clarity An expert gemologist assesses the diamond’s clarity using a specialized scope and a 10x magnification loupe. Clarity is rated on a scale that ranges from IF (internally flawless) to I3 (imperfect or heavily included). The gemologist plots the diamond’s characteristics on a diamond diagram.
  • Finish The finish of a diamond includes factors such as polish, symmetry, and proportions. Polish and symmetry are assigned grades from Excellent to Poor, based on the quality of the polish and the precision of the cutting details. Proportions are evaluated by considering elements like table diameter, crown height, pavilion depth, girdle thickness, and culet size, and are also assigned grades from Excellent to Poor.
